Sabres:

Grading the Lockout: Pegula earns a Passing Grade

With that hideous lockout thing finally over, it’s time to deal with our conflicting emotions: do we return to the FNC? Do we re-up with NHL Center Ice? Do we buy tickets? Do we boycott the first game?

Folks, it’s time to move on.

The Internet fan petitions didn’t stop this thing. Our laments on Twitter went unheard. That YouTube video from the father son duo (wherein the father had terminal cancer) did nothing to get the NHL or NHLPA moving. I said this at the beginning of the lockout: “Even if a (fan) petition was signed by terminal cancer patients, all it could possibly garner from the NHL is something like a quick ‘Thanks for your passion’ statement.”

And yes, we learned that Derek Roy’s Ferrari is loud when he starts it. Evander Kane has a cellphone (and iPad) made of wads of hundred dollar bills.

Don’t stop enjoying hockey now. Go to the games. Don’t boycott anything. Have fun. Dream of a Cup.

But none of this is news. None of it is surprising. The NHL is all fun and games between CBAs, but when it comes to the lockouts, we are reminded that it is also an grossly obese animal that requires an incredible diet of cash to stay happy. Again, not news, but it is what it is.

This just part of the process and price we pay to see the best in the hockey loving world skating in Buffalo, NY.

It’s time to move on, and enjoy the game again.

As for Pegula – yes, he voted (as all the owners did) to go ahead with Gary Bettman’s lockout. However, he also:

  • Kept everyone on staff
  • Erected the French Connection Statue
  • Held the innovative “Sabres University”
  • Is helping to rebuild Buffalo

This guy gets an A+ in my book.

This lockout will continue to sting for a while, but those emotions will pass. They always do. Bettman called us “The best fans in the world” for our tendency to return to the game. Hey, he’s an idiot. Whatever. The fact is, we never left the game. Hockey has continued all over the city during the lockout.

Don’t stop enjoying hockey now. Go to the games. Don’t boycott anything. Have fun. Dream of a Cup.

And if you see Pegula, shake his hand. He’s done a lot in the Queen City already, and without a doubt, he’s got more for us on the way.

Go Sabres.

Mercy Rule Weekend in Buffalo (& a #Bills Blackout Tweet of the Day!)

The Bills have applied the Mercy Rule for fans this week.

Let’s put a tourniquet-twist on one of the good ol’ days in Buffalo sport, and start the chant for this weekend here and now:

Thank you, Sabres!

Thank you, Bills!

This year is a special kind of nightmare for Buffalo sports fans. No hockey and humiliating football have combined to form the perfect ragestorm on the Twitter, radio, blog and print conversation – every week – for months now. I know I’ve had enough, and frankly, a blacked out game is kinda welcome news.

Family time in the B-lo. Use it to catch up on your holiday shopping, or visit one of those cultural thingys we talk so much about here. I hear the zoo is wonderful this time of year. Ooo – or you can go check out the view graffiti and giant friggin’ spiders at the top of City Hall.

“Hey look at the urban sprawl on THIS side! OMG THERE’S SPIDERS EVERYWHERE.” Yes. And these are just the babies.

Seriously though, I do love  my Buffalo. Hell, I settled here after trying out life on three separate continents. So, I’m going to take advantage of #blackoutlockoutmageddon and do what Buffalonians do in times of crisis like this: go to those art galleries buy a six pack and scan NFL mock drafts, maybe cry a little.

Maybe scan the other channels on TV.

Maybe not.

This weekend is going to suck. Again though – thank you Bills for gutting us all throughout the season. It helps us all survive this blackout gutpunch, especially after all your supreme efforts at disemboweling the art of modern era playcalling and execution.

If you have any things-to-do suggestions, lemme know in the comments section below. Even though none of you will. Jerks.

On to the blackout Tweet of the Day. Barrister, get us the hell out of this post!

TARP! Aweomse. Wordplay wins the day.

Go Bills/Sabres.

#NHL #Lockout Tweet of the freakin’ Day. Sigh… it’s BANDY!

Technically, the tweet of the day reads “Check your Wikipedia(s).”

Whatever, jerk.

Yea I said “jerk.”

Still, despite the slightly implied “Read your own Freedom-Online-Dictionary-You-Internet-Hand-Out-Information-Junkies,” Slava is truly a great  follow on the Twitter, and if you’re not following him, then you’re doin’ it wrong-o.

So what is “bandy?” Well, it turns out that it is all sorts of awesome – so long as you consider using frozen soccer fields as an ice rink.

FROZEN SOCCER FIELDS AS A HOCKEY RINK.

Oh, hell yes!

Bandy. We have bandy! It’s ours, and Bettman and Co. (Pegula) can never take it away.

No shirt-sleeves allowed, gentlemen. Making blood happen: totally cool. Elbows up, fellows!

Bandy!

Light at the end of the tunnel of the NHL lockout? Can we organize this in Delaware Park? Hell yes.

Let’s do this.

Screw you, NHL, we can bandy.

Who’s up for a game?

Go Sabres.

NHL Lockout Tweet of the Day

1

Yawn.

Get ready for the onslaught of “Good! I hope he stays there! He sucks!” comments on the message boards and the bar stools. Yes, the yelling and fist-shaking WILL take place despite the fact he’s been developing into one of the Sabres’ best defensemen.* (You know how it goes, folks: he’s a Euro. Yes, I went there.)

Gettin’ paid.

Remember when hockey was fun? Take us out of this post, @LindyRuffsTie:

Go Sabres.

*Yup, I linked to HF Boards. Got a post to back up Sekera’s play? Add it to the comments section. I’ll make a list: #SekeraWatch
