22-7-4.

That’s the record the Sabres needed to get to 93 points entering last night’s contest against the Montreal Canadiens. With their 3-1 triumph, that challenge just got one game easier. They’ve now won two games in a row, and despite how things have gone, the child in us has got to now be thinking –

Can they do this?

Ted Black refused to count his team out, at least rhetorically, when recently he stated on air on WGR 55 that “you never know where the seeds of greatness will be planted.” At the time, it came off to most as the newest flavor of magical Kool Aid for fans to drink. But heck, now we’re two victories in, and the kid in us loves a cup of Kool Aid. Sure, there’s no real substantial value to the stuff, but it’s fun.

2 quarts of water, and a whole cup of sweet sugar. Make mine a "Tropical Punch," and keep 'em coming. I want to enjoy the rest of this season.

The Sabres now need to go 21-7-4 to make it to 93. The previous record of 22 wins will now get them to 94. Of course, this will all change with a loss, and we can only afford 7 of them. But take a sip with me: this is the perfect test going into what might be a deep playoff run.

“Say what?” you ask? Clearly the sugar has doused my brains and my faculties have gotten a bit jolted in the buzz, but there’s a point to be made here. In order to win over Lord Stanley, a team, at least, must post a postseason record of 16-12. The Bruins won it last year by going 16-9, which isn’t too far off the mark from 21-7-4.

The Sabres will shock us all if they actually pull this off, but as they become healthy, and if their secondary scoring begins to regularly find the back of the net, and the team displays the brand of hockey that awed us in Europe and in the early portion of the season, it can’t be ruled out. Not yet.

Yes, Thomas Vanek is injured. He’ll be “out for some time” with an upper body injury, and can no longer carry the team alongside captain Jason Pominville. But it’s not about two guys making it happen, it’s gotta be the whole team. Last night, the team won without Vanek. They played well in all zones, and gave us a reason to hope again.

Last night’s “seeds of greatness:”

  • Ville Leino was not just good along the boards and a constant threat on offense, but he beat Price with a sweet snipe to tie the game at one. Seed planted for Ville.
  • Paul Gaustad was a pesky bastion of stength all night, recording three points. His big block in the waning seconds of the second period, when the teams were tied at one, set up a fair fight for the third. He scored the game winning goal as an immovable pillar in front of the crease. Seed planted for Goose.
  • Pat Kaleta scored on a sharp angle – on an empty net – but also delivered 4 clean hits. And for once, his “style of play” didn’t earn him a bad call by refs who had been sending him to the sin bin based on reputation alone. He’s baaaaack. Seed planted for Kaleta.
  • Christian Ehrhoff returned from injury just in time to make the last game before the all star break. He promised to keep things light on the bench and restore the team’s confidence. I’m not sure how much of that he’s accomplished so far, but they’ve won both games with him back. Last night he had 2 assists en route to a team high tie of 26 shifts. Seed planted for The Hoff.
  • Ryan Miller was his old, unflappable, stoic self. His clutch saves kept the Habs at bay while the Sabres kept up their attack. He backstopped their confidence. Seed planted for Millsie.
  • The Sabres won their second game in a row – their first winning “streak” since November (since the Lucic incident, to be precise). Seed planted.

Most important of all: they won the game. That is one seed.

21 more seeds to go.

And if they can manage that, there won’t be much doubt in town that they can’t get another 16.

Drink up folks, and let’s have some fun. Get it trending:
